Artist Statement

I’ve always found artist statements to be ironic. As artists, we yearn for freedom from the constraints of society. By engaging in the practice of art making, I thought I’d be free from the quantitative, standardized world that seems to be closing in around me. As I’ve begun practicing more professionally, however, I’ve learned that things like artists' statements, digital portfolios, and social media presence are somewhat necessary. Although I totally understand the practical use of these standards, I think it’s ironic how creatives have created our own little cages, cages which may hurt more than they help.

If I must describe my works with words, I’ll say my study of religion and art history have informed my work as a Social Practitioner. I’m interested in context and how it (or lack thereof) can affect audience interpretation/reaction to a given work. By layering historical references within established mediums like (photo, installation, performance, etc) I’m able to expand my own awareness in addition to those people around me.
